Think of LG and familiar objects come to mind: televisions, refrigerators, phones, vacuum cleaners. Patent drawings make those objects much less stable. A television rolls down into furniture, a refrigerator door becomes a window and display, and a projector robot treats the wall or floor around it as a screen.

Elsewhere, a phone expands sideways, an in-car display changes curvature and position, and a headset mechanically adjusts itself around the wearer. A robot overlaps the body as an exoskeleton, a cleaner shows its future route in AR, and a shopping cart can follow its owner.

These ten inventions are described in US patent publications centered on LG Electronics. LG SIGNATURE OLED R, InstaView Refrigerator and CLOi SuitBot provide clear public product context for three entries, but From Patents has not verified one-to-one patent marking for those products.

What is it?

"Rollable display device" places a flexible display part on a roller inside a housing. FIG. 1 shows the large screen rising from the long base when the display is in use.

A conventional television remains a large black rectangle even when switched off. Here, the viewing surface itself can be stored. The area available for watching and the area permanently occupied in the room no longer have to be the same.

FIG. 02US20230175759A1
Patent FIG. 2 from US20230175759A1 showing a refrigerator with a transparent display area in the door.

A transparent display in the door can reveal the interior while putting information on the same physical surface.

Drag to pan when zoomed. Use + / − to zoom, 0 to fit, arrow keys to pan, and Alt + arrow keys for the previous or next FIG.

What is it?

"Refrigerator" describes a refrigerator door incorporating a transparent display. FIG. 2 shows the appliance from an oblique angle with the large door surface forming the interface between the user and the compartment.

A refrigerator normally requires opening the door to see what is inside. A transparent display can preserve that closed boundary while letting the user look through it and overlay useful information on the same area.

FIG. 03US20200404232A1
Patent FIG. 7 from US20200404232A1 showing a mobile robot near a user projecting an image onto a surface in a room.

A mobile projector robot can inspect its surroundings and choose a wall, floor or ceiling as the most suitable projection surface.

Drag to pan when zoomed. Use + / − to zoom, 0 to fit, arrow keys to pan, and Alt + arrow keys for the previous or next FIG.

What is it?

"Method for projecting image and robot implementing the same" describes a mobile robot with a projector that recognizes the user and the surrounding space, then chooses a projection area appropriate for the content. FIG. 7 places the robot and user together in a room while an image is projected nearby.

A fixed projector assumes the screen location in advance. This proposal moves the projector itself and treats nearby physical surfaces as candidates, letting the room supply the display area.

FIG. 04US20220279058A1
Patent FIG. 2 from US20220279058A1 comparing a roll-slide phone in contracted and laterally expanded states.

Part of a flexible screen stays rolled inside the device and slides outward to increase the phone's width and usable display area.

Drag to pan when zoomed. Use + / − to zoom, 0 to fit, arrow keys to pan, and Alt + arrow keys for the previous or next FIG.

What is it?

"Roll-slide mobile terminal" stores part of a flexible display inside the body and expands the frame so more of the panel becomes visible. FIG. 2 compares the contracted and expanded states.

A foldable divides a screen around a hinge. A roll-slide design instead changes the outline of the device itself: the phone grows sideways and a continuous hidden portion of the display appears.

FIG. 05US20240010069A1
Patent FIG. 6 from US20240010069A1 showing the curved form and moving mechanism of an in-vehicle display.

The display can vary both its curvature and its physical position inside the vehicle.

Drag to pan when zoomed. Use + / − to zoom, 0 to fit, arrow keys to pan, and Alt + arrow keys for the previous or next FIG.

What is it?

"Deformable display device for vehicle" makes the shape and location of an in-car display variable. FIG. 6 shows the relationship between the curved display portion and the mechanism that moves it.

Most dashboard screens are fixed pieces of interior trim. Here, "where is the screen?" and "how curved is it?" become changeable states that can respond to driving, viewing or storage needs.

FIG. 06US20210026148A1
Patent FIGS. 3A and 3B from US20210026148A1 showing a head-mounted display and its rail-and-gear fitting mechanism around a user's head.

Rails and gears move the wearable structure so the headset can mechanically adapt its fit to different users.

Drag to pan when zoomed. Use + / − to zoom, 0 to fit, arrow keys to pan, and Alt + arrow keys for the previous or next FIG.

What is it?

"Head mounted display" uses gears and rails to move parts of the wearable member around the user's head. FIGS. 3A and 3B show the relationship between the head and the fitting mechanism.

Headsets are usually adjusted by manually tightening a strap. This design gives the mechanism itself the ability to move, shifting some of the fitting task from the wearer to the device.

FIG. 07US20210220207A1
Patent FIG. 1 from US20210220207A1 showing a user wearing a robotic structure around the waist, hips and thighs.

A rear body, hip-joint drive and leg supports overlap the wearer to provide physical assistance.

Drag to pan when zoomed. Use + / − to zoom, 0 to fit, arrow keys to pan, and Alt + arrow keys for the previous or next FIG.

What is it?

"Wearable robot" places a rear supporting portion, hip-joint driving unit and leg mounting structures directly on the user's body. FIG. 1 shows the robot overlapping the waist and legs.

A service robot usually moves next to a person. In this arrangement the machine becomes part of the wearer's outer structure, turning two separate bodies into one assisted system.

What is it?

"Transparent display device" puts a transparent display panel and control module into a frame that can be attached to the door of a cooler or another product. FIGS. 1 and 2 show the display area and the frame structure.

Rather than building a transparent display permanently into the appliance, the display-bearing door surface can become a separate module. Products remain visible behind it while information or advertising appears in front.

FIG. 09US20180055326A1
Patent FIG. 10D from US20180055326A1 showing a phone displaying an AR overlay for a robot cleaner's predicted path and cleaned region.

The phone overlays the cleaner's planned route and completed area on the real environment so the user can see what the robot intends to do next.

Drag to pan when zoomed. Use + / − to zoom, 0 to fit, arrow keys to pan, and Alt + arrow keys for the previous or next FIG.

What is it?

"Robot cleaner and a system including the same" can display the cleaner's estimated traveling path as an AR image on a mobile terminal. FIG. 10D distinguishes the planned route from the already cleaned region with different lines.

Autonomous cleaners are convenient partly because people do not have to drive them, but that also makes their next action less obvious. This system exposes the internal route plan by placing it back into the physical room visually.

What is it?

"Movable robot" describes a mobile robot that can function as a shopping cart. FIG. 1 shows the basket, frame, wheels and handle that make the robot recognizable as an ordinary cart.

The patent includes a user-following mode and a driving-power supporting mode. It can track the position of a phone or wearable and follow the user, or detect force on the handle and add motor assistance while the person pushes.

AFTER THE FIGURES

In LG patents, the boundaries of appliances start to move

Across these ten patents, the objects that hold screens change shape. The boundary between television and furniture, refrigerator and window, phone and tablet, dashboard and display can physically roll, turn transparent, extend or deform.

If a screen is not needed, roll it away. If the device has no large display surface, borrow a nearby wall. If the phone is too small, extend its outline. If heads differ, move the mechanism instead of asking every user to fit the same shell. Again and again, the object adapts to the situation rather than staying fixed.

That may be the distinctive thread in these LG patents: the future appliance is often still recognizably a TV, refrigerator, cleaner or cart, but its boundaries are no longer fixed. As appliances blend into furniture, rooms and bodies, even the question of what category an object belongs to becomes harder to answer.
